Costa Calida South Beaches
The Southern Costa Calida is a combination of rugged mountains and hills that plunge into the Mediterranean, and wide sandy bays. From Cartagena, the large beaches only really start again between La Azohia Cove and Mazarron, then again between Calabardina and Aguilas. Most of these beaches are blue flag, are all safe and good for swimming and there is excellent diving on the marine preserves such as Cabo Cope.

The first easily accessible area from Cartagena is the small fishing village of La Azohia which used to rely on tuna but now is a base for divers. It is a quiet, beautiful spot nestled beneath the hills with views south along the coast. The beach here is a mixture of pebbles with long sandy areas too.

The coast road leads via the cove beaches of Isla Plana towards the resort town of Puerto Mazarron. Puerto Mazarron has 2 extensive sandy beaches a marina and fishing harbour. A lot of money is being spent in this area with new marinas and promenades and second beach at Bolnuevo is one of the best.

Further south we reach Calabardina and Aguilas. Calabardina has 2 extensive beaches and is adjacent to the huge protected headland known as Cabo Cope natural park. Cabo Cope is very impressive and it also has a marine preserve associated with it which is very popular with divers.

Finally we come to Aguilas, dominated by it’s castle on the headland which splits it’s long sandy beaches in two. Here there are 2 long promenades backing the beaches, a marina and working fishing port.
