Mar Menor Beaches The Mar Menor area has wonderful clear warm waters and a host of beaches to choose from. The Mar Menor is Europe’s largest Lagoon with miles and miles (Kms and Kms) of gently shelving sandy beaches that are predominantly blue flag. As the Mar Menor is a huge area but is only 7m deep at it’s deepest point, during the summer it gets very warm indeed – in fact it is truly like a warm bath – making midnight swims a possibility !! (Holidays on the Costa Calida do state that midnight swims are taken at your own risk and remember – your buoyancy can go down as well as up !!!) The Mar Menor is the largest lagoon in Europe and has a maximum depth of only 7M. The waters of the Mar Menor are crystal clear, exceptionally warm, calm and rich in salts and minerals, in fact, the temperature never falls below 18°C. In certain areas of the Mar Menor the therapeutic clays can be found, these are a favourite with the Spanish tourists, who cover themselves with the clay and then bake in the hot sun. It is said to be good for skin complaints, rheumatism and arthritis etc.
There are several really excellent beaches around the Mar Menor. From the North traveling anticlockwise – Lo Pagan has 2 sandy beaches separated by a marina and fishing harbour. A long promenade stretches to the rear of both of these beaches and joins up with the next resort – Santiago de la Ribera. Santiago de la Ribera has an excellent beach the royal yacht club and has a ferry that travels across the Mar Menor to the Tomas Maestre Marina on the La Manga Strip every 2 hours. The Airport and military airfield of San Javier ( Murcia ) is next along the coast and the beach here is restricted access.
From the airport southwards we come to Los Alcazares which is the largest resort town on the Mar Menor. Los Alcazares has a promenade that is over 4km long stretching from the airport right through to the marina at the southern end. There are many beach bars and restaurants that line the beach. Further south there are 4 more villages with beaches – Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, Mar de Crystal and Playa Honda. Out of season these small resorts are quite quiet but in the height of the season they are transformed by a host of Spanish tourists. All of these villages have a good sandy beach and most have a small marina too.
The Mar Menor – crystal clear and very warm and inviting.
