 Murcia City – capital of the Region of Murcia, it is also often known as the baroque capital of Spain for it’s wealth of fine buildings. It’s main street is a Mecca for shopaholics, with typical Spanish opening hours of 9.30am – 2pm then 5pm till 8pm. One street back from the main street, is a pedestrian area where you can walk from square to square, each with it’s own set of pavement cafes and church. Not to be missed – the cathedral – shopping !! – particularly the January & July sales.
Cartagena – A port city from pre-Roman times, Cartagena has a wealth of history. A naval port, the promenade has recently been refurbished and now has a variety of restaurants and bars. Walking into the city from here one passes the Palace and the Calle Mayor which has some impressive baroque buildings and good shopping area. There are many museums here and a Roman amphitheatre. Not to be missed – the spectacular Roman fiesta in mid September.
Lorca – A typically Spanish inland town with an impressive fortress that has medieval tours and events. Not to be missed - the Easter fiesta, an impressive procession of Roman army, chariots, floats and horses – a very different Easter parade.
Caravaca de la Cruz – One of the 5 holy cities in the Catholic church (alongside cities such as Rome and Jerusalem). Nestled in the mountains it is dominated by the fortress that guards the church holding the famous cross. Not to be missed – the spectacular wine horse fiesta where jewelled horses are raced from the town to the fortress.  |
